The Wessels mine is situated in the Northern part of the Kalahari Manganese field. Mineralisation of the Kalahari Manganese field is developed in three braunitekutnahorite lutite layers interbedded with iron formation in the Hotazel Formation of the Palaeoproterozoic (2400 to 2100 Ma) Transvaal Sequence which was deposited within an intracratonic basin on the Kaapvaal Craton.
Where Does Manganese Mining Occur? Manganese is the fifth most abundant metal found in the crust of the earth. Although 80 percent of manganese resources are found in South Africa, manganese is also mined in Australia, China, India, Ukraine, Brazil and Gabon.
The Hotazel Manganese Mines are made up of two mines, Wessels (underground) and Mamatwan (open cut), and the Metalloys manganese smelter. The company has 30% of the product from its mines processed at the smelter, where a managese alloy is made. Hotazel is also the site of a relatively new manganese mine, Tshipi é Borwa.
